University of Hargeisa hosted an event of commemoration for the Somaliland women’s day 2020 organized by MESAF, SONSAF and NOW. The event was attended by the Vice-president of Somaliland Hon. Abdirahman Saylici, the Minister of MESAF Ms. Hinda Gani, the President of UoH Dr. Mohamoud, the Minister of Information and Culture Hon. Sulieman, Chairman of UCID party Eng. Faisal Ali Warabe, the Director-General of MESAF Hon. Abdirashed, EU ambassador to Somaliland and Somalia Mr. Berlanga and many other guests. International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year around the world. The UN officially recognized the day in 1977 but it’s commemoration started in 1913 in Russia by a women peacefully protesting the World War One. Since then, it is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. the day not only recognizes the achievements made by women but also brings awareness to the obstacles that still stand in their way relatively in their respective countries.
The Minister of MESAF opened the ceremony and explained that the Ministry stands for empowering the women and advocates for those that are victims of domestic violence. The president of the University of Hargeisa also pointed out that the female students at the University are increasing very fast and now female students are academically brighter than the male students. He emphasized that if Women are going to take bigger roles in the country’s decisions, they need to be educated. Mr. Bernerga, EU ambassador to Somaliland and Somalia encouraged the office of the presidency to not only prioritize women’s quota in elections but appoint more women in the cabinet and lower important positions. The Vice president of Somaliland Hon. Saylici concluded the event and acknowledged that more women in Somaliland are victims of Social problems and the government will put more effort into ensuring both the social and political rights of women.
