CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: PhD And Master Scholarship (One Health)

About the program (JOHI)

The pastoral community in the Somali-inhabited regions is mainly affected by preventable diseases which are transmitted between humans and animals (zoonotic diseases) and nutritional disorders. This is compounded by inadequate access to affordable and quality healthcare services in the community. The health system lacks the capacity to provide the minimum level of primary health care. Due to its geographical location bordering Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti and the mobility of pastoralists in the region with their livestock, the potential for infectious disease transmission between and among humans and livestock is high in Somaliland and the other neighboring regions. Poor indicators in nutrition and food security, low access to potable water poor access to the market, and degraded rangelands further accelerate the challenge and fuel the problem.

To address these multi-faceted health challenges in pastoral areas, an integrated one-health approach to human, animal, and environmental health has proven to be highly relevant. The core objective of this program is to get an improve health and resilience of Somali pastoralists and their animals.
