The president and the corporate communication director of the University of Hargeisa have completed an official visit to Dalarna University in Sweden between 1 st to 8 th of June 2023. The primary purpose of the visit was to fast-track the inter-organizational partnership that the University of Hargeisa has with Dalarna University. The first spot of the visit was at Dalarna University where the delegate met the vice chancellor, senior researchers, and faculty members. Later, they attended the thesis defense and graduation ceremony of Khadra Ali Egal- a faculty member at the College of health sciences- who was awarded a Ph.D. in reproductive health soon after her defense. The delegate had a strategic and fruitful meeting with Dalarna University’s vice chancellor and the other concerned officials. After thoroughly discussing its long-term impact, both parties ratified to continue the bilateral collaboration between the University of Hargeisa and Dalarna University prioritizing issues of special importance.
The following are the key action points discussed during the meeting:
- Staff capacity building programs: Following the successful graduation of two of UoH’s staff with PhDs, Dalarna University will continue training more PhDs upon the availability
of research funds/grants.
- Mobility programs: the two universities will exchange staff and students for exposure, training, and experiential learning. The mobility program is especially essential for students and staff to learn new cultures, people, and novel ways of doing things. The knowledge and experience obtained from this encounter will be transferred back to the respective fields of work or study.
- Joint-research conferences: university of Hargeisa and Dalarna University will co-organize research conferences to be held both in virtual or on-site mode (either in Hargeisa or Falun). The themes of these research conferences will address and produce knowledge of pressing issues, and problems that need to be researched in Somaliland and Sweden.
- Twining Programs: another collaboration area of interest is a twinning program at the college/faculty level. Currently, the undergraduate nursing and midwifery programs of University of Hargeisa are already twinned with their counterparts at Dalarna University. Both parties agreed on to extend this further to include more faculties.
