The Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) launched an M.A module on ‘Climate Justice, Social Differentiation and Mobility in the Horn of Africa

On September 1, 2024, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS) of the University of Hargeisa, in collaboration with the Rift Valley Institute (RVI), the Open Society University Network Hub for Connected Learning Initiatives (OSUN Hubs) and the Black Mountains College (UK) launched an M.A module on ‘Climate Justice, Social Differentiation and Mobility in the Horn of Africa’ at the University of Hargeisa in the Republic of Somaliland.
This is an interdisciplinary module which foregrounds the importance of local knowledge in understanding environmental change and uncertainty. It draws upon the use of participatory methodologies and approaches to make rapid assessments of the experiences of different groups with a vested interest in moving towards greater environmental stability, as this is locally understood.
An essential focus of this module is for students to track how socially differentiated responses to environmental change within communities, across households and in public organisations are related to social mobility in the form of migration, shifting social status, policy changes and practice.
In centering local knowledge, the module encourages students to critically evaluate knowledge claims across all parts of society and how these interact, and to gain competence in applying a decolonial lens which is supportive of indigenous and gendered ways of knowing and being. In the long-term, this module will be incorporated into the Institute’s existing MA programs and other Graduate programs at the University.
