University of Hargeisa Participates in Planting 2,000 Trees on National Tree Plantation Day

A major event organized by the College of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Environment was held at the SGS Auditorium of the University of Hargeisa, where the university officially announced its participation in the planting of 2,000 trees for the National Tree Planting Day, observed annually on April 15th. The ceremony, which was attended by several dignitaries, highlighted the importance of tree planting in protecting the environment and addressing the worsening global climate crisis. The event marked the beginning of planting 2,000 trees within the University of Hargeisa campus and featured speeches from many officials.
Dr. Abdirizak, Dean of the College, began by outlining the purpose of the gathering and the role that the faculties of Agriculture and Environment play in this national day. He emphasized the college’s commitment to contributing to environmental protection and planting trees that can help mitigate climate change. Representatives of Gacan-libax and Al-Huda secondary schools also spoke at the event, expressing their delight in celebrating with the University of Hargeisa and participating in this important national occasion. Mohamed Muse, the Regional Director of Education for Maroodi-jeeh, stated his satisfaction with the collaboration between Somaliland’s largest university and secondary schools in this national tree planting initiative. The Nutrition Affairs Advisor to the Somaliland Vice President Zakaria Dahir also addressed the gathering, highlighting the critical relationship between the environment and climate. He stressed the importance of preserving our natural environment and reducing tree-cutting in areas outside cities.
Finally, top management of the University of Hargeisa, including Dr. Abdirashid Ismail, Vice President for Administration and Development, and Dr. Fuad Obsiye, the Vice President for Academic and Research, spoke at the event. They emphasized the University’s role in environmental protection and monitoring climate change. Dr. Abdirashid noted that the University of Hargeisa leads all national universities in various areas and is now the flagship institution for planting 2,000 trees within its boundaries. Dr. Fuad, who concluded the event, reiterated the university’s ongoing and future commitment to research on environmental and climate issues. He mentioned upcoming forums that will address critical social issues through in-depth discussions.
At the end of the event, each participant planted a tree within the university campus. Also, 50 trees were awarded to each of the three participating schools as part of the 2,000-tree planting project.
