Background

The college of Applied and Natural science was established in the academic year 2000. It is one of first two faculties that the university started with. However the college has been updated in a number of times to include new programs.

Currently, the college offers 4 undergraduate programs namely as;

Nutrition and Food Science
Environmental Science
Statistics and Data Science
Medical Laboratory Science

These Natural and Applied Sciences programs are designed to produce broad- based, resourceful, well- equipped graduates, grounded in theory and practice, who would be capable of :

Creative and effective application of their knowledge and skills;
Be able to communicate scientific ideas in both written and oral formats.
Apply their knowledge to interpret both clinical and/or experimental scenarios.
Promoting academic excellence through well-developed pedagogical and quantitative research
Apply principles of the scientific method to distinguish between theories and hypotheses and between scientific fact and opinion.
Demonstrate laboratory and/or field skills and safety.

The growing awareness of nutrition and food quality as determinants of human wellbeing requires highly competent and skilled graduates. With UoH, you’ll develop your knowledge and skills in the scientific basis of food and nutrition, which will prepare you to work in multidisciplinary teams in a range of health and industry settings. This course, prepares you for a career in many fields relating to the promotion of health at individual and community levels through the improvement of the food supply. You’ll study subjects such as the chemistry of food, human physiology, food analysis, food safety, food preparation, food product development, the impact of nutrition on human health, disease and sports performance, and the social and public health aspects of nutrition.

Studying Nutrition and Food Science at UoH will help you become

Community nutritionist: change attitudes toward food and health; provide advice, guidance, and support to people.
Health promotion officer: use social and environmental interventions to improve health.
Sports, exercise and fitness nutritionist: optimize the performance of athletes and physically active people.
Food scientist: use chemistry and biology to look at the microbiological, chemical and physical properties of food and ingredients.
Product development manager: develop innovative products and solutions to meet strategic business objectives.
Microbiology specialist: work in food manufacturing or government to research microorganisms to prevent food-borne diseases.
Food policy advisor: offer qualified health and nutrition advice to the public.
Food safety advisor: conduct food and safety reviews and monitor procedures to ensure standards are met.
Quality assurance officer: conduct assurance audits of production facilities to oversee quality, efficiency and production issues.
Research scientist: conduct lab-based investigations, experiments and trials to broaden scientific understanding; as well as non-lab-based field research and clinical human trials.
Food technician: conduct research and experiments on food products involved in the production process.
Flavor technologist: sample products and conduct experiments to alter the ingredients in food and beverages to make it taste better, replicate a taste, or develop a new taste.

Our Bachelor of Environmental Science teaches understanding, rational analysis, and improvement of human impacts on the natural world. Our graduates in Environmental Science are expected to have strong theoretical knowledge, combined with practical and creative skills, equipping them with wide-ranging expertise, allowing them to solve diverse and emerging environmental problems and to communicate unbiased information to the wider community.

The advanced skills and knowledge developed and demonstrated in this Bachelor program are highly valued by a range of local and international employers. We are very optimistic that our students in this faculty will be both competitive in the employment market and well-prepared for further study in environmental science disciplines.

Our program is prepared to help you succeed in these careers;

In this well prepared Degree program, you will develop the knowledge and skills to work as a medical scientist. In your first year, you will take courses in chemistry, cell biology, anatomy and physiology. You will learn about the body’s structure, how it functions under normal circumstances and general health challenges.From your second year, you will start to focus on specialist courses in medical laboratory science and learn how the body functions under diseased conditions. In your fourth year, you will gain more in-depth knowledge of medical laboratory science and undertake full-time clinical placements in each of the areas of medical science.

This degree is taught by registered industry professionals with established careers working and will incorporate all areas of clinical pathology including hematology, transfusion science, cytology, biochemistry, microbiology, histology, molecular pathology and immunology, providing you with increased career opportunities. Hands-on experiences in the laboratories at UoH are embedded throughout the course. We are recognized for delivering graduates who are confident with advanced techniques and able to conduct appropriate investigations to a professional standard.

Careers and outcomes

Our medical laboratory scientists work in the pathology industries, generally in hospitals or in public or private laboratories. Our graduates are also employed in allied heath (e.g. assisted fertility clinics) and public health laboratories.

Graduates of this course may choose a role in a multidisciplinary setting or can specialize in an area of particular interest, or complete postgraduate studies for a career in research.

This BSc. in Statistics and Data Science program is designed to produce graduates who are well-acquainted with fundamental concepts and techniques in the field by exposing students to the three main disciplines of statistics, mathematics, and computer science. The overarching objective of this program is to produce students who exhibit intellectual curiosity, have a cultivated commitment to life-long learning, have critical and evaluative skills to solve business, social, economic and overall policy problems in their communities and industries of practice and, do all this supported by ethical and philosophical foundations essential for personal and professional development.

Additionally, the program is designed to ensure that all courses are delivered with a practical hands-on approach that allows students to see how each concept feeds to a larger problem-solving capacity in varying domains.

Career Opportunity of this Program

Graduates of this program may be hired as statisticians or data scientists who are able to collect and curate large volumes of data, bring statistical and machine learning methods to bear on new questions and create data pipelines and workflows that transform digital information into actionable insights. Perhaps most importantly, employers are looking for individuals who are equipped with the foundational training needed to ensure that the individuals they hire into these roles are readily able to learn and critically assess new tools as they become available. Students in this program are also prepared to succeed in graduate studies.
