The Ministry of Livestock and Rural Development and the University of Hargeisa (UoH) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening collaboration in livestock and rural development. As part of this agreement, the Ministry handed over a modern veterinary laboratory to the University, enhancing research and education related to animal health.

The signing ceremony took place in the Smartroom of the School of Graduate Studies, where the Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Mr. Omer Shu’ayb Mohamed, and the President of the University of Hargeisa, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, signed the agreement.

The event began with a warm welcome for the Ministry’s delegation, followed by the signing of the MoU. Afterward, the laboratory equipment was officially transferred to the University’s main laboratory, where it was formally received by the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Veterinary, and Environment. The Director of Laboratories at the Ministry provided details about the equipment and its intended use. The Dean also explained how the new laboratory would benefit students and researchers at the University.

The ceremony was attended by senior University officials, including Dr. Fu’aad Obsiiye (Vice President for Academic Affairs), Dr. Cabdirashiid Ismaaciil (Vice President for Administration and Development), Mr. Cali Mire (Director of Communications), Mr. Khaalid Abdi (Director of Research), Dr. Soheir Hassan (Director of School of Graduate Studies), and Mr. Ali Derie (Manager of Berbera Sea Port). From the Ministry’s side, several departmental directors were also in attendance.

This new partnership is expected to strengthen ties between government institutions and the University of Hargeisa. It is the second such agreement between the University and a government ministry, aiming to advance livestock services, including the diagnosis of animal diseases, zoonotic diseases (transmissible between animals and humans), and the overall development of rural communities in Somaliland.
