The University of Hargeisa hosted students from the Departments of Agriculture of three different Somaliland national universities, namely Amoud University, University of Burao and University of Hargeisa, for a five-day workshop (7 – 11 September, 2025) co-organized with the Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation. The workshop, titled “Basic Arthropod Collection, Identification, and Curation with a Focus on Insects”, was led by Dr. Sulub Ismail Ahmed, Director of Research and Projects at the University of Burao, and was held at the ‘Geed-deeble Botanic Garden’ for the practical field collection methodologies. This was the third entomology workshop to build the technical capacity of the students and to enable them gain practical knowledge.

The closing event, held in the University’s IPCS Hall, was attended by Mr. Ibrahim Hersi, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Hargeisa; Dr. Mary Barkworth, Co-founder of the Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation; and Mr. Faysal Jama, Manager of the University of Hargeisa’s Biodiversity Museum.

At the conclusion of the event, students were awarded certificates of attendance. Additionally, the specimens collected during the workshop were deposited in the Biodiversity Museum at the University of Hargeisa for scientific reference.
