University of Hargeisa and UNDP Explore Collaboration to Advance Somaliland’s Creative and Cultural Industries

The University of Hargeisa recently hosted a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of an ongoing initiative to support the development of Somaliland’s Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI), commonly known as the Orange Economy. The delegation, comprising Jorge Pinto (Project Coordinator), Zahra Abdi Haji Mohamed (National Consultant), and Said Yusuf (Operations Manager), visited the University to conduct a diagnostic assessment and engage stakeholders in the development of a strategic roadmap for the sector.

During their visit, the delegation toured several key University facilities, including the Biodiversity Center and Herbarium, the University’s modern laboratories, and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), gaining insight into the institution’s contributions to research, innovation, environmental conservation, and community development. The delegation later met with the President of the University of Hargeisa, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, and members of the University’s leadership and management team to discuss the role of higher education in strengthening Somaliland’s creative economy through research, innovation, entrepreneurship, skills development, and youth empowerment.

The discussions also explored potential areas of collaboration between the University and UNDP, including joint research initiatives, capacity-building programmes, innovation and entrepreneurship support, youth skills development, and evidence-based policy engagement. The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to fostering innovation, economic diversification, and sustainable development through strategic partnerships that support the growth of Somaliland’s creative and cultural industries.
