University of Hargeisa Drives Regional Higher Education Dialogue and Represents Somaliland Institutions at the 11th Tana Forum

The University of Hargeisa (UoH) proudly celebrates a significant institutional milestone as its President, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, represented both the university and Somaliland’s higher education institutions at the prestigious 11th Tana Forum, held in Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Tana Forum is a premier regional platform for dialogue on African peace, security, and governance.

Dr. Sulub served as a distinguished panelist in the Vice Chancellors’ Dialogue, which brought together university leaders from across the continent — including the Presidents of Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University (Ethiopia), and Sinnar University (Sudan). The session centered on the theme:
“Universities’ Dual Mandate in Africa: Harnessing Local Knowledge and Advancing Global Solutions.”

Drawing from UoH’s experience as a leading institution in a post-conflict and developing context, Dr. Sulub emphasized the university’s strategic approach of synergy — connecting local realities with global relevance. He highlighted that African universities must evolve from knowledge consumers to knowledge co-creators, leveraging indigenous systems such as traditional conflict resolution and climate adaptation to inform global innovation.

Dr. Sulub’s participation alongside other prominent university leaders underscores UoH’s growing regional influence and its commitment to advancing higher education, innovation, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa and beyond.

His message called on African universities to transition from being knowledge consumers to active, confident co-creators of solutions, grounded in local systems like traditional conflict resolution and climate adaptation, and translate that local success into valuable global lessons.

The participation of President Sulub alongside other distinguished presidents and vice-chancellors underscores UoH’s growing influence and commitment to shaping the future of higher education and sustainable development in the region.
