Enhancing Skills in Arthropod Collection and Digital Biodiversity Documentation

Enhancing Skills in Arthropod Collection and Digital Biodiversity Documentation

The training program focused on the collection of arthropods, with particular emphasis on insects and arachnids. Participants gained hands-on experience in collecting, identifying, and preserving specimens, skills that are essential for advancing research and biodiversity conservation.

The session underscored the ecological importance of arthropods, highlighting their critical roles in agriculture, environmental balance, veterinary science, and climate studies.

In addition to field collection techniques, the training introduced participants to modern methods of specimen documentation and data management. Attendees were trained on how to record and upload biodiversity data to global platforms such as OpenZooMuseum and iNaturalist, ensuring that valuable scientific information is properly preserved, geo-referenced, and accessible to international research communities.

This capacity-building program was implemented by the College of Agriculture, Veterinary and Environment through the Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation (SBF). Participants were encouraged to contribute actively to international biodiversity databases, promoting awareness and supporting ecosystem conservation by recognizing the vital role arthropods play in maintaining environmental health and sustainability.
