Junior students from the Department of Public Health at the University of Hargeisa conducted an educational field visit to DP World Berbera and Berbera General Cargo Port as part of their practical training in Port and Maritime Health. Using the department’s Port and Maritime Health Inspection Checklist, students assessed key public health areas including entry health requirements, inspection procedures, waste management systems, and environmental sanitation practices. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to observe the implementation of public health measures within Somaliland’s largest maritime and logistics hub.
During the visit, students gained hands-on experience in port sanitation, waste management, vessel inspection protocols, and the role of environmental health officers in safeguarding public health at points of entry. They also observed DP World Berbera’s commitment to occupational health, safety, environmental protection, and operational excellence through its established Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) framework. The field exercise strengthened students’ understanding of how international port health standards are applied in practice and reflects the department’s commitment to experiential learning and preparing future public health professionals to contribute to Somaliland’s public health security.
