Junior students from the Department of Social Work at the University of Hargeisa undertook an educational field visit to Gabiley Female Prison as part of their Correctional Social Work course. The visit was organized and led by Mr. Mukhtar Mohamed Abby, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, together with the course lecturer, Mr. Khadar Mohamed Ahmed. During the visit, students were welcomed by the prison leadership and engaged with senior officials who provided valuable insights into the institutionโs administration, daily operations, rehabilitation programs, and correctional practices. The experience enabled students to connect classroom learning with real-world correctional services and gain a deeper understanding of the role of social work within the justice and rehabilitation system.
The field visit provided students with a practical and enriching learning experience that strengthened their understanding of rehabilitation, psychosocial support, parole services, and offender reintegration. Through structured observation, guided discussions, and direct interaction with prison staff, students enhanced their analytical, research, and professional skills while reflecting on the ethical responsibilities of social work practitioners. The Department of Social Work remains committed to promoting experiential learning opportunities that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to contribute effectively to Somalilandโs correctional system and broader social welfare sector.
