The University of Hargeisa last night hosted a grand and well-organized book launch event featuring Afrikaay Warlaay and The Eton College of Somaliland, authored by Ambassador and Poet Bashir Sheikh Omar Good, the Somaliland Ambassador to the United States.
The event was attended by numerous scholars—including literature enthusiasts—and various dignitaries representing different sectors of society. The ceremony was officially opened by the President of the University, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, who welcomed the author and ambassador, Bashir Good, as well as all guests who honored the University and the writer with their presence. The President expressed his gratitude to the author for choosing the University of Hargeisa as the first venue to launch his two books, written at the end of 2024. He also thanked the author for his remarkable contributions to national development, particularly his role in advocating for Somaliland’s quest for recognition.
The event featured an engaging discussion between the author and Eng. Abdifataah Omar Abdillahi, who has deep knowledge of the poet and ambassador. The author gave a brief explanation of The Eton College of Somaliland, a book that captures his memories and the rich history of Sheikh Secondary School. He highlighted the profound impact that period had on his life and what inspired him to write the book.
He then shifted to his extensive poetic work contained in Afrikaay Hurudooy, a rich collection of poems written across different periods—past, present, and recent. Together, the author and Eng. Abdifataah delved into these poems from various angles, exploring themes such as social consciousness, politics, the fight against clanism, love, and many aspects of life.
The lively event also featured remarks from Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdirahman Bakaal; Mr. Abdiwahab Maax from Telesom Group; and the Deputy Chairman of the Kaah Political Party, Mr. Abdikarim Mohamed H. Ali. All speakers reflected on their knowledge of Bashir Sh. Omar Good and the deep wisdom embedded in his literary work. They praised the artistic quality and creativity found in his poems and writings.
The event concluded with a Q&A session focused on the author’s books, followed by book signing and distribution. Various dignitaries acquired copies of the books. The University of Hargeisa purchased 100 copies of the two books combined, which will be placed in the University Library for students, researchers, and readers to benefit from.
