Scientific Debate: The Role of Solar Energy in Advancing Agriculture in Somaliland

The University of Hargeisa—specifically the College of Agriculture, Animal Science, and Environment—together with the Energy Talk Initiative, organized an important scientific debate focused on “The Role of Solar Energy in Advancing Agriculture in Somaliland.” The objective of the discussion was to explore how clean solar energy can serve as a key tool for improving agricultural production and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers across the country.

The debate was officially opened by the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Animal Science, and Environment, Dr. Abdirisak Dahir Awale, who emphasized that solar energy offers a major opportunity to reduce energy costs and promote sustainable agriculture built on modern technologies. He noted that the University of Hargeisa will continue its role in research and awareness-raising on the use of clean energy.

The debate panelists included:

  • Eng. Filsan Abdirahman, who served as the moderator and skillfully facilitated the discussion;
  • Ali Abdullahi, Agriculture Technical Specialist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, who explained how both the government and farmers can benefit from solar energy;
  • Saeed Abiib from Kaafi Solar Energy Company, who showcased the technologies and commercial solutions offered by the company;
  • Eng. Sacad Adan, a TVET Trainer, who spoke about the importance of technical and vocational training related to renewable energy; and
  • Mustafe Abdigadir, Senior Lecturer, who provided an in-depth analysis of the role universities play in advancing research and education related to agriculture and clean energy.

In conclusion, the participants agreed that solar energy is key to the future of agriculture in Somaliland. They highlighted the need for strong collaboration between universities, government ministries, and energy companies to develop sustainable systems that enable farmers to directly benefit from modern solar technologies.
