During the opening ceremony, the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Partnerships at the University of Hargeisa, Dr. Khaalid Ahmed Cabdi, stated that community service is a fundamental responsibility of the University, alongside education and research. He noted that programmes such as SIYB strengthen community engagement, build professional capacity, and contribute significantly to sustainable economic development.
Likewise, the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Hargeisa, Dr. Fuโaad Cabdi Obsiiye, emphasized the Universityโs commitment to delivering academic programmes that respond to labour market needs, enhancing the capacity of academic and administrative staff, and preparing students to become job creators rather than job seekers. He stressed that the ILO-SIYB TOT trainings play a vital role in improving skills and increasing competitiveness in the labour market.
The University of Hargeisa expressed its gratitude to the ILO and the programme organizers, particularly Dr. Fekadu Yehuwalashet, for their efforts in bringing the SIYB programme to Somaliland. The University reaffirmed its full commitment to strengthening collaboration with the ILO in the areas of youth development, entrepreneurship, and skills enhancement.
During the event, remarks were also delivered by Mr. Geoffrey Kilonzo (Kenya), Mr. Benedict Mwambela (Tanzania), Mr. Ashenafi Daba (Ethiopia), Mr. Mustafe Muhumed Hassan, Mr. Abdiqathar Rashid, and Hon. Cabdishakuur Siciid Bustale, all of whom highlighted the importance of the ILO-SIYB Training of Trainers (TOT) programme in advancing skills development, entrepreneurship, and overall community development.
