The National Peace Committee Visits the University of Hargeisa

The National Peace Committee of Somaliland paid an official visit to the University of Hargeisa today. The delegation, composed of eight members and led by Hon. Abdiqadir H. Ismail Jirde, was warmly welcomed by the university leadership. The President of the University of Hargeisa, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, along with other senior university officials, received the delegation.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship and explore areas of collaboration between the University of Hargeisa — the largest higher education institution in Somaliland — and the National Peace Committee.

The visit began with a tour of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the university, where the Director, Dr. Hassan Abdi, briefed the delegation on the institute’s mission and work. Following this, the guests were hosted at the university’s modern conference hall located within the School of Graduate Studies, where a significant meeting took place between the university leadership and the peace committee members.

The Director of Communications and Marketing at the university, Mr. Ali Ismail Mire, presented an overview of the university’s programs and strategic priorities. Members of the committee, including Jaamac Ahmed (Odey) and the Chairman, Hon. Abdiqadir Jirde, expressed their appreciation for the visit and their interest in building a strong working relationship with the university.

Dr. Hassan Abdi, Director of the Institute for Peace at the University of Hargeisa, emphasized the potential for collaboration in areas such as conflict prevention and peacebuilding. He noted that the institute has conducted several research studies that could support the national committee’s mission. Mr. Khalid Ahmed Abdi, Director of Research at the university, also highlighted the university’s capacity to assist the committee through organizing dialogues and academic forums on peace and conflict issues.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Sulub, the University President, warmly welcomed the committee and underscored the university’s commitment to contributing to national development through community engagement, high-quality research, ghostwriting and knowledge dissemination. He stated that the university possesses valuable data on past conflicts in Somaliland and deep expertise in peace studies. Dr. Sulub affirmed the university’s readiness to cooperate with the National Peace Committee in research, academic debates, and by offering its facilities for public forums and major conferences.

The meeting concluded with a strong mutual understanding and a shared intention to formalize a cooperation agreement between the University’s Institute for Peace and the National Peace Committee of Somaliland.
